Oil leaking from generator gear pulley

Hi 101 members, just finished my 1928 101 and I have noticed that when driving at 45-55 mph oil is getting pushed out of the generator gear, and is getting on the battery box and surrounding area.

I talked to Kent Thompson and he said there was a service shot of that issue and a repair recommendation. If any one is looking for parts, or advice, Kent Thompson has been a great resource.

If anyone has that service shot if they could email it to me I would greatly appreciate it.

Here is a photo of my 101. Im also looking for a 1931 project if anyone knows of one. Thanks, Wayne

Basically in the service shot is described there is a oil supply hole drilled for the bushing at the top in the gear housing. That hole is plugged and a oil draining hole is drilled at the underside of the bushing instead. Check out and scroll down http://www.indian-france.com/rtm.html

And please support him hosting this valuable info.

Hopefully that link will help cure your problem, Wayne. That usually works better than installing a seal, which is irreversable, and wil blow anyway when bearing gets worn.

Also a possibility that the crankcase pressure is affecting primary and tranny. Is your timing case breather working well?

I disassembled my generator drive adapter and  mine was the later 4 bolt type. What I found is that the bushing has a drain hole that did not line up with the drain hole in the casting. Once that bushing was removed and re aligned that cured the piling issue I had. Thanks

Quick question. I am new to the forum and have only had my 101 for a few months.  I recently rode mine for a 60 mile return journey and although the bike ran well it leaked a lot of oil from the generator drive wheel area. I would like to take it out but do not know if there is a 'trick' to getting the pulley and pedestal off. There are the four bolts that hold it on and I removed them but it doesn't budge even when tapped with a rubber mallet. Can someone confirm for me that there is no hidden fasteners internal I need to remove or if I am just dealing with a very stuck part that needs more aggressive tapping?

Hi Andrew, nothing inside is holding it, it's only a gear in the genny drive meshing with the gear on the clutch hub, so maybe the gasket has hardened!
