rivet size and source?

I disassembled my spring pack for painting and I'm curious if anyone has the correct rivet to reassemble it?  I think I found the correct size online but only in  a box of 100.  Walkers aren't answering, Greer's have rivets for later springs and they're not the correct size.  So far I've found part# S1621T, factory# 20B179.  The solid rivet is 3/8" diameter, about 1" long and I guessed it should be a flush mount head (even though the one I removed was not flush mount.)

    Anyone?  thanks!

    Hi Harry,

A couple years ago, I had a broken leaf in my spring pack replaced by a business not far from me, Spring Align of Palatine. Maybe they can help you with a replacement rivet. Their info is:

2312 N Rand Rd, Palatine, IL, United States, Illinois

    (847) 934-1525

    Toni@spring-align.com

    Good luck!

Here you can have data sheets and read up on nomenclature and other gobbledygook.

Thanks Dave and Carl!  What I'll wind up doing (at this point, anyway) is using the source named Blacksmith Bolt and Rivet Supply (https://blacksmithbolt.com/collections/other-steel-rivets ) as they only require a minimum order of 10 rivets.  So I'll have 9 spare rivets left over instead of 99 left over!    Let me know if you need one!

    Harry,

I don't know what size the rivet is supposed to be, but Greer sells one for the Chief spring pack: https://jerrygreersengineering.com/p/rivet/13251

Maybe its as simple as cutting this down to the correct length.

Hi Dave, I saw Greer's rivet and it's listed at 5/16", the rivet I removed is 3/8" x ~1"....so based on having the old rivet in hand to measure I've gone looking for a 3/8"!  The springs are at the painter and tomorrow I'll see him again so I'll measure and verify the 3/8" x 1".

I've searched the R&O for information on this rivet, couldn't find it anywhere.  Kent Thompson was more than a really good person, he was a great source for trivia like this!

So....I should have known this, but the rivet I removed has a 3/8" shank, and it required some force to finally get it out after drilling one end off of it.  Today I took the new Greer rivet with a 5/16" shank to visit my spring leaves (or is it leafs?) at the painter's  ...the Greer rivet with the 5/16" shank fit in the hole with very little play and we all agreed the 5/16" shank will expand when riveted to nicely fit the hole.  There's 1/6" difference in the rivet shanks, and that means 1/32" on each side...plus the 3/8" rivet that I removed had been expanded when it was first hammered in.

So bottom line, the Jerry Greer's 5/16" rivet listed for '36 and up Chiefs and Fours will fit and do the job (after shortening of course)!

Frankly I would not rely on that a cold riveted iron rivet does expand in the hole more than perhaps the first 2mm (1/16 in). It is different with a proper red hot rivet that is soft all the way down to the head. But then a hot rivet has to have a certain diameter or mass to keep the heat, the time it takes to form the butt. Add to that it might have to be done riveting with a certain process where the rivet is compressed with an anvil before forming the butt.

Now, the spring pack on an Indian might not be rocket ship specified, but If it was important, I would ream the holes in the spring leafs to a certain same diameter, and use a thicker rivet and turn down the shank until slide or light press fit in the hole if I couldn't find or buy a proper fitting one. Then cold hammer the butt.

Thanks Carl-Erik, I've got both size rivets now, the 5/16 and 3/8 so will be able to pick the best size!
