Thanks Konstantionos .Good to know, never tried it. Standard gearing on the 31 usually means slightly lower comfortable cruising speed, as do the heavier solid flywheels introduced at the end of the run. I should know, but am not sure, I think Randy told me that they may have changed the primary gearing late in 31 too, presumeably to counteract sprocket issue.

This is all so interesting. For all i know my 31 was very happy with the 43-23 , no problem in mountainous terrain. If someone does the math is slightly lower than the  22-40 or 22-36. sprocket combination. My bike now is appart so i could count the peimary sprockets to check how many teeth there are, although i don t know too much of my bike s history so as to know if it is a erly or late 31 , or even if the primary belonfs to it from the beginning. What is the normal primary  teeth count for the 101?
