I've only recently joined as I've just acquired a 101 frame and sheet metal to begin my long term project!  Going to need lots of parts, not the least of which are motor/primary/gearbox, and lots of advice and help, so thanks for letting me join!  ... and my first action was to purchase the R&O book... really great!

Well, I have developed my first question!  How much does a 37ci engine/primary/gearbox weigh -- approximately?!?  Anyone have a guess?

    Thanks!

If I assemble up the loose parts for an engine/transm./gearb. that I have easily at hand, including a complete magneto, it adds up to 48,5 kg. Some small bits is missing.

Perfect!  Thank-you Karl-Erik.  Working on getting a motor/primary/gearbox shipped from a long way away and we were guessing 75kg, so I will round up to 50kg and use that for shipping quotes.

Well, I am trying to find out what wheel I've got!  From the limited knowledge I have I believe the 101's were supplied with 18" wheels, and mine came with a 20" clincher rear wheel with hub.  So I'm curious about a couple of things, could a 20" wheel be ordered as an option?  And what hub do I have, is it 101?

I don't know how to post pictures here, but I put this question and some photos up on the AMCA site here: http://www.antiquemotorcycle.org/bboard/showthread.php?25997-Sorting-out-this-101-I-just-got!

Not 101 , Harry, but almost certainly Indian. Think it may be  late 20s chief? have one here the same. Indian hubs had loose ball bearing races until 29, when they went to  taper roller.

At the times when it was difficult to buy rubber tires, it was common to relace the hub with rims that where easier to find tires for. But your tire seems to come from a Chief.

Just a note, but I have read in some Indian brochure that Chief wheels could be ordered as an option on the Scout (dammit I yet have to find it again in my albums) so it should be regarded as original in a judging! I would advice against using clincher tires in all type of riding with the bike. Chief had 19" normal wire bead tires from 29-30 so there's your option if you want larger tires.

A tip is to start a new thread whenever a new category question arise. And write a related but short headline starting with the main issue. (Just an example: Rims Clincher 19") That makes searching in the archives easier for those that wants to backtrack what is written earlier.

    I will do that!

And thanks Carl-Erik and Tim, I'm going to measure it up some more and see if it is indeed from a Chief!
