while we are on bolts can someone tell me the correct sized bolt that goes into the magneto timing gear and holds that gear onto the magneto tapered shaft please?

Sorry, but I don't know. Is it Bosch or Splitdorf?

it is a Splitdorf NS - I actually can't find a brand but the tech tips have the NS which is the same as mine.

Hi Michael, Its a nut on a splitdorf. The thread is easily damaged. If you have a bolt  then someone has damaged or broken off  the thread and replaced it with a bolt, ( Not unusual) so it could be any size.

    Investigate carefully.

It does not need to be very tight, just enough to flatten a lock washer, as it should be held in place by locking on the taper.

great Tim thanks for that. It makes more sense if it was a thread - so I guess it was broken off - drilled out and threaded so now I need a bolt. I will have to work out the thread and get a bolt accordingly.
