primary intermediate gear

    Trying to buy new gear ring and spacer for my primary intintermediate gear and checking Walker machine there seems to be 2 types for 1928 and the rest of the years. My motor is 1928 but the primary case was acquired separately. Anyone know the differences?

    Hi Pete, primary and gears and transmission case on earlier scouts are different sizes, the clutch is smaller. a complete earlier clutch and transmission can be used on a 28 up bike, but none of the primary drive parts are interchangeable . with the later ones, you can use one or other but not mix and match.

    Pet, approx guidlines.

    The 101 clutch is approx 7.25 inches od on the transmission case housing circle, with a clutch basket approx 6 1/8 " , 84 teeth . this will run with an intermediate gear of36 teeth, and a drive of 33. 


    The earlier scouts have a trans case outer circle ofapprox 6 3/4 ",a clutch basket of od 5 1/2" and 77 teeth. I think these run an intermediate gear of 40 teeth, and a drive gear of 30 teeth, but do not have one to hand to be sure.

    Thanks Tim i am going home to check my parts at lunch time. I know I have a 36 count intermediate gear and pretty sure the transmission is a 101 so that makes all the parts I have a 28

    The smaller clutch transmission has a teeth count of 30-40-77. The measures are approx. 1.23"-2.97"-5.625" or in millimeters 57,4-75,6-142,8. The bigger clutch transm. has a tooth count of 33-36-84. The measures are approx. 2.05"-2.69"-6.125" or in millimeters 62,8-68,3-155,6.

    good news 33-36-84 I have the correct parts. 

    There is no mention of the intermediate gear assembly in the R & O shop manual so here is how I think it assembles. The gear itself has a bearing ring pressed in part # T2401. Does anyone know the clearance to set on this stack up with the shim washers?

    Don't assemble too tight! Oil needs to get in the bearings. With the inner and outer cases in hand, just assemble the intermediate gear in the case and feel with a finger the sideplay. With tounge in cheek, if you can move the gear from side to side and hear a "tick-tock", the chance is that the sideplay is about right. If the sound is a loud "klick-klack" it might be too large. Bearing play should be kept small with rollers of proper, fitted size, the same as with the crank, or rods. Sideplay is good, radial play is bad. A gear that is too loose on the bearing can be loud and add vibration and wear. Retainers I do assemble with the openings inwards, against the spacer, because if the bearing fries, there's a slightly less risk the fingers distort and jam the rollers.
