Hello, does #22-D-7  or # 26-D-1 inside of outer primary cover ring a bell with anyone? Will these fit Chief or Scout? thanks for your time

I am not saying it is, but first number can be an indication to what year the casting mold was made, or first time casting. Most, or rather many parts for the 101 starts with 28-x-x.

I have not collected data on casting numbers and what difference between numbers for the Chief and Scout so I can't answer more specific.

not sure, will have to check, but think the 22 number is a smaller clutch scout, and the 26 number a chief ? chief primary inner has no provision for genny drive , as the genny was in front of the engine, and the smaller clutch has only two studs for genny drive, later 101 inners to fit  larger clutch have a four stud generator drive mount, off the top of my head.

Thanks guys, all interesting information. I am looking for a primary cover for my 101 project & seen 2 with these casting #'s. I will compare some photos also to see what the difference is on the outside surface. These covers[22-D-7,26-D-1] have the raised Indian letters .Grateful for quick response.

The 101 use the big clutch, and only one version of inner and outer cover will fit. The outer has casting number 28-D-(and 1, for what I can recall). The clutch basket has 84 cogs, the idle gear has 36 and the drive gear 33 cogs.

Be aware that 101 covers can be confused with Chief parts as they are very similar in appearence. And easy to confuse is Chief drive gear that also has 33 cogs but a larger hole for the crankshaft. Scout early clutch hub looks the same but has a different taper than the 101 gearbox main shaft.

    Thanks Carl-Erik, I have located a 101 primary cover with 28-D-1 casting #.
