My first 28 short frame 600cc was through bolt  and from memory  a fairly low number 3 digits

Thanks Phil.  Apparently, the resulting pedestal front motor mounts breakage with the 45 in the 1927 scout Police Special/Sport Solo lead to the development of the through-bolt front motor mount configuration used in the 1928 short frame.  The through-bolt front motor mount configuration was carried over into the 101s (1928-1931), standard scout (1932-1937) and the chief (1932-1953).

    Regards,

    Jeff.

The last question from Jeff Stevens is easiest to answer as all 101 frames is constructed with the through bolt engine lugs. Before that there was the knee-type short frame that was equipped, in my opinion the first batch released only with 45ci engines, but in -28 also with 37ci engines. I base that loosely on old pictures where is seen the older type of front light and that a few 45ci engines where still equipped with the small clutch but in -28 almost all but maybe not in some markets, had the large clutch and the newer headlight.

That knee-type frame had the front downtubes parted and fit in the newly constructed (knee) lug for the through bolt, same as on the 101 frame so pedestal mount engines can't easily be adapted to those frames. When that frame type was on the market is a matter of debate, I want to put it to mid- or late -27 well before the 101 was produced, but same time the 101 was developing on drawings. At that time particularly for that frame type, the engine (both 37 and 45ci) was changed to through bolt system and my opinion is that those engines where stamped CG/CGP for the whole production that spanned well into -28, parallel with the sale of 101.  Before that in time maybe as early as mid -26, the larger displacement 45ci engine (BGP) was developed  and tested to be launched for the -27 season, still with pedestal mount in the standard frame, but perhaps found that the pedestal mount, small clutch and rear brake was not up to pair.
