Pistons oil scraper ring

    In the past, 101 engines were built without oil scraper rings.

    How do you do it today, do you mount oil scraper rings?

    Are there any advantages or disadvantages?

    Actually I am working on a Scout 101 45cu engine from 1928.

    I have built my 3  750cc Scout engines  with an oil scraper ring on rear piston only  , and all plain rings on the front cylinder  , .

      My reasoing is that the rear gets the most ,or too much oil  ,if levels in sump get too high .  The front sees much less oil so no issue

    I have been using sport scout style pistons for years with three compression rings and an oil scraper with no obvious ill effect, and far less carbon build up. 

    Well set up oiling system seems to work fine with a scraper. I tend to use a straight 40 or 50 in really hot weather , not a 60., and on occassion in my bike, which I often thrash mercilessly, altho not for long distances, I mostly use a straight 30, altho this has the disadvantage of finding its way outside the motor in numerous places after a while.
