muffler for 1929 101 scout

    Hi again from Tasmania (Australia)

    I have just installed a repo muffler on my 101, that I sourced in Poland, but I notice that I only have about 1 cm or 1/2 inch clearance from the back tyre to the muffler. It is correctly installed onto the 3 fastening places and I can't see how I can move it at all for more clearance. Is that a normal clearance as I am envisaging the rear tyre getting too hot?

    The Inlet side of my Euro sourced 101 muffler is off set   I turned it over to gain a bit more clearance

    Thanks Philip for your reply, mine is also Euro sourced and yes I have turned it over to get the clearance that I have - otherwise it would not go on as it was pushing against the tyre.

    Im sure I also attered the hanging brackets a little       Is your rear clamp  on inside or outside  of  frame lug   .  400x18 tires on mine   , still only have about 20mm clearance but  never been and issue

     As a matter of interest, are the top of the downpipes still silver soldered on , or are they swaged?

    Hi Tim  in photos of systems  they still apear silver soldered  ,Mine on my 28 are and have never been an issue but  expected  it would be ,  lots of miles later and no issue yet

    The clearance on my ‘29 scout, is less than half inch and more like btw. 3/8 and 7/16 inch.  The clearance on my ‘31 scout, is more like 1/2 inch.  I have travelled incident free distances on both.  I am able to safely place my hand, approx. half inch away from the muffler, where I feel radiating heat, but do not get burned.  Whilst underway, one must envisage, cool air force flow btw. muffler and tyre, constantly cooling both exhaust and tyre, and dissipating any problematic heat.  Hope this helps.  Cheers

    Many thanks for all the info - I have also checked the clearance with a friend of mine who has a 1928 101 and his is about the same as mine so I can rest easy that mine is correct.
