Gearbox ...chain guard stud

If the chain guard stud has punched through the gear case, how much distance would the stud tip have, before it comes into contact with internal components?  I have found a 1/4 “ 24 tpi stud, 1 1/2  inch in length, which suits the case thread.

When screwed in, it bottoms out, where a 1/2 inch length, of the stud, remains exposed and visible, when viewed from the outside of the case.  I now need to know, if that point where it bottoms out, is the gear casing, or an internal gearbox component.  A rotating gear perhaps ?
